REDUCE, RECYCLE & REPLACE: DOUBLING DHC NOW!

35th Biennial Euroheat & Power Congress
9-10 May 2011, Paris France

2011 marked the 35th edition of the EHP biennial congress, and took place in the wonderful city of Paris. For those in the District Heating and District Cooling sectors, the Congress is the most important conference and exhibition event on the European and international calendar.
REDUCE, RECYCLE AND REPLACE: DOUBLING DISTRICT HEATING NOW!

Achieving the EU 2020 and 2050 energy goals requires adopting a systemic approach based on three RE’s: reducing end-use, recycling energy that otherwise would be wasted and replacing fossil fuels. District Heating and District Cooling play a key role in such a concept. This congress was an important reminder of the benefits and the potential that District heating and cooling offer, as modern, sustainable energy solutions. It gave delegates a unique platform for debating political demands, business models, customer value, marketing tools and much more. In addition, exhibition, technical tours and social events provided extra networking opportunities.

The conference provided a forum for professionals, academics and policy makers to convene and provide an opportunity to interact, network and share experiences.

EU Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW)

11-15 April 2011
Brussels, Belgium

Euroheat & Power had two events during the week in Brussels. The first:

Best Practice Legislative examples for District Heating & Cooling
Crowne Plaza Europa Hotel Schuman
Event date: 12 April 2011

On Tuesday 12th of April, Euroheat & Power organised a conference on “Best Practice Legislative examples for District Heating & Cooling” in the frame of the European Union Sustainable Energy Week, in Brussels.Speakers highlighted how district heating and cooling (DHC) have the potential to significantly reduce Europe’s primary energy consumption by recycling heat that otherwise would be wasted.

Sabine Froning (Managing director of EHP) and Birger Lauersen (President of EHP) provided the audience with an overview of the challenges the EU faces today in terms of heat supply and energy efficiency. For the European Commission, Eva Hoos, stressed that District Heating and Cooling should be considered almost as a silver bullet for reaching the EU's energy efficiency targets. Robin Wiltshire (BRE) and Sven Werner (Halmstad University) presented the results of the Ecoheat4eu project, on the most and least favorable legislative frameworks in Europe for DHC.

Finally, Adolf Topp (chairman of EHP energy policy group), concluded by reminding the attendees how important it is to define European policies that can be coherently translated into national energy policies. To achieve this, respecting the energy hierarchy expressed in the three "R's" - reduce, recycle, replace - is key, in particular with a view to reconciling renewables and efficiency policies. Other important measures include heat planning, mandatory heat recovery from thermal power production and, last but not least, CO2 taxation outside the Emissions Trading Scheme. This has already proven efficient in Sweden and Denmark and would give opportunities for DHC as a low-carbon, high-efficiency option for the residential market.

The second event taking place is a joint affair, with our colleagues at ESWET, the European Supplier of Waste to Energy Technology and the Renewable Heating & Cooling European Technology Platform.

Biomass and Waste in District Heating – From Plan to Implementation
Brussels , Rue de la Loi 170 Charlemagne Building Sicco Mansholt
Event date: 14 April 2011

Biomass and waste are keys to the achievement of the EUs renewable energy goals. However, realizing the potential of District Heating as identified in the National Renewable Action Plans requires addressing a number of specific challenges. This workshop takes as its theme the transfer of best practice and focuses on successful strategies. The workshop programme will be available shortly.

Towards better documentation and analysis: European DHC Statistics Workshop

30 March 2011
Hotel Silken Berlaymont, Brussels, Belgium

District Heating & Cooling suffer from a lack of visibility in European and international statistics, which in turn results in a lack of prpoer analysis and modeling.
This workshop will provide insights into the currently available information on the heating sector and its potential for improvement. The recently developed District Heating Barometer will be presented and focused discussion groups and a plenary debate will provide the opportunity for participants to get actively involved.

We invite representatives from national DHC associations and policymakers, as well as representatives from national statistical offices to an open forum for discussions on how to build and make the best use of European-wide statistics for District Heating and Cooling.

Joint Annual Conference: Teaming up for energy renewal: cogeneration and district heating

2 June 2010
Brussels, Belgium

Euroheat & Power and COGEN Europe organised a joint Annual Conference on Wednesday 2 June 2010 in Brussels.
The new European Parliament and European Commission face many challenges in energy and climate policy. In 2010 COGEN Europe and Euroheat & Power will showcase the proven capability and still untapped potential for cogeneration and district heating in this unique event in Brussels. The Conference brings the strongest advocates and the most influential thinkers in cogeneration and district heating to Brussels to highlight the significant role which efficient provision of electricity and heat must play in resolving Europe’s climate and energy challenges today.

The theme of the one-day conference was “Teaming up for energy renewal: cogeneration and district heating” and focused on best practice, policy and strategy for action in Europe’s energy policy in the light of Copenhagen outcomes.
