Optimising Energy Systems: Innovations in Thermal Energy Storage Technologies
Experts from research and industry will discuss innovations in seasonal storage and its economic integration into district heating systems. The event will feature representatives from RHC-ETIP's Technology Panel on District Heating & Cooling & Thermal Storage.
Four EU-funded projects pioneering TES for decarbonisation will be also highlighted:
TREASURE: Demonstrates large pit thermal energy storage to enhance sustainable district heating networks, aiming for improved cost-effectiveness, efficiency, and scalability across Europe.
USES4HEAT: Focuses on underground seasonal thermal energy storagewith demonstration sites in Italy and Norway. These systems will store and integrate excess heat into local district heating networks, utilizing renewable heat sources and breakthrough enabling technologies.
THUNDER: Develops TES for data centers in urban areas, featuring thermochemical material-based storages for efficient, compact solutions with near-zero thermal losses. These systems capture waste heat in summer and release it to district heating networks in winter.
INTERSTORES develops cost-effective, large-scale seasonal thermal energy storage using Reno-sTES and Giga-CTES technologies. By leveraging natural rock formations and repurposed infrastructure, the project aims to increase storage capacity, lower CO₂ emissions, and provide sustainable TES solutions. Demonstrations in Finland and Germany will showcase adaptable, replicable technologies for EU-wide decarbonization.
